Akiba Maid Sensou has two sides to it (Do correct some parts of this if I am wrong somewhere, but...) Apparently some people already pointed out the alternative kanji for Meido, which stands for Underworld/Netherworld, but from my observation, it had quite a few bits of historical accuracies to the maid side of the story as well: I suppose many people would say that maid culture began in 2001 with the first permanent maid cafe being opened, but that was not completely true. Maid has, naturally, always existed in Japan and already formulated into assorted domestic maid uniform versions since 1910-1940. The current cafe/restaurant service uniform (server uniform) originated from a stream of server uniform that was popularised from the 1970s, through different media (games played a big role from the 80s onward), the 1970s server uniform itself was modified from the 1910-1940 maid uniforms. In parallel to this development, the 1910-1940 maid uniforms also branched off into two different streams of uniform, this time more exclusive to maid (as servant rather than as server), one of which was specifically designed to maintain their original role as servant, the other - slightly different in design - was meanwhile popularised through video games, marked by a very specific year.
